Olbia
The city of Olbia was intensively occupied in the pre-historic period. From the 8th Century BC, the current site of the city was inhabited by Phoenicians and Greeks. With the foundation of the city, in the 4th Century BC came the beginning of the most important period in the history of the city and its port.
Coming from the sea, the view of Olbia, surrounded by inspiring hills, is characterised by the imposing and majestic presence of the island of Tavolara, which today is in the centre of the protected marine area of the same name. There is also the old Roman name of "Hermaea" in homage to the god of comerce and sailors. At the centre of the splendid gulf, characterised by the typical mussel cultivation and the tens of shipyards for pleasure yachting, is found the functioning complex that is the modern maritime station of Isola Bianca, by now one of the most important passenger gateways in Italy. Arriving by plane, one descends into the very modern Costa Smeralda airport, with connections for all the major Italian cities and many European capitals.
The coastal territory of Olbia, unknown to many, extends for several hundred kilometres, alternating between beaches and cliffs of incomparable beauty. There is the Area Marina Protetta in which stands, at fully 500m in height, the mass of Tavolara; the beaches of Pittulongu, Bados, Marinella, lo Squalo and Mare Rocce, characterised by fine white sands and crystalline water; then, to the South, the beaches of Saline, Costa Romantica, Poltu Casu and Porto Istana.
We could continue, but we shall stop here, sufficient to say that Porto Rotondo, one of the most famous destinations for the global jet set, also belongs to our community.
