The Emerald Coast
'The Emerald Coast', a name inspired by the azure colour of the sea. With Porto Cervo at its centre, the coastline stretches 55km (34 miles) with more than 80 bays, rocky coves and sandy beaches such as the famous Capriccioli beach, the Spiaggia di Principe and Baia Sardinia. Many of the idyllic, remote bays are best reached by boat, although of course there are plenty of pristine beaches that are also accessible by car.
Porto Cervo is the main centre of the so-called Costa Smeralda, one of the most prestigious tourist areas in Gallura on Sardinia's north-western coast. It is a village of multicolored buildings, recently built in front of the natural port and the surrounding hills. The Porto Vecchio (Old Port) dates back to the 60's and is on the south-eastern side, while the new harbour is equipped with the most modern and complete tourist infrastructures for its marine traffic.
The Port is visible from the sea and makes reference to Capo Ferro, a 46 m high promontory with a lighthouse indicating north of Porto Cervo. . In the vicinity of Porto Cervo are the enchanting beaches of "Pevero", "Pedra Bianca", "Pietra Niedda", "Cala Liscia", "Ruja", "Punta Capricciosi" and "Portu Li Coggi". The beaches in the area of Porto Cervo seemed to be a healthy mix of crowds and seclusion, in between San Teodoro and Porto Rotondo. These beaches had the best snorkelling action, with tons of interesting rocks and critters to intrigue you.
Beautiful coves are scattered all along the coast from Olbia to the Golfo di Aranci and along the shores of the Golfo di Congianus to Porto Cervo and beyond to Baia Sardinia, where a beautiful beach lies below the town plaza, cafes, restaurants and shops. A walking trail at the left side of the beach wanders out along the bay, whose emerald-colored waters lap at the foot of fantastic rock formations. The trail ends at a clutch of tiny semi-secluded beaches among eroded rock formations.
